Skeet shooting is a recreational and competitive activity where participants use shotguns to attempt to break clay targets, shot at high speed into the air from a variety of angles. It is a discipline that requires safety, technical ability, and concentration.

Safety and enjoyment of the setting were the primary goals for the design of the structure.

Sitting on the edge of a plateau in the Teas hill country, a native limestone plinth foundation, housing equipment and batteries, supports a light shading structure overhead. The moment-resisting steel frame shade structure was designed for minimal distraction. An almost paper-thin roof consists of paint grip metal supported on 2” laminated T&G wood decking. Wind loads here are greater than gravity.

The asymmetrical gable lifts toward the eastward valley view with the extended side shading the west like a visor.

There is no infrastructure in the vicinity; a rooftop solar array provides power and water is hand-carried in by visitors to the site. To protect local flora, the construction zone was tightly restricted and native plants were introduced for re-vegetation.

High on this hill of natural Texas beauty, the sun shines hot, and the wind blows cool.
